Why this project?

Heraldry is one of the oldest visual design systems in the world, with rules developed over 800 years. Despite this rich tradition, most online heraldry tools are either paid services, overly complex, or simple random generators. Heraldry Forge was created to make the art of blazon accessible and educational.

What is it?

A heraldic shield designer that lets you build a coat of arms using proper heraldic conventions. Choose from authentic tinctures (colors, metals, and furs), classic charges (symbols like lions, eagles, crosses), and traditional field divisions. The tool enforces the Law of Tincture and generates a proper blazon description in the language of heraldry.

How does it work?

• Tinctures: The five classical colors (Gules/Red, Azure/Blue, Vert/Green, Sable/Black, Purpure/Purple) and two metals (Or/Gold, Argent/Silver).
• Law of Tincture: The fundamental rule that metal should not be placed on metal, nor color on color. The tool warns when this rule is broken.
• Charges: Traditional heraldic symbols drawn as SVG paths, organized by category (animals, objects, celestial, plants).
• Field Divisions: How the shield background is partitioned (per pale, per fess, per bend, quarterly, etc.).
• Blazon: The formal heraldic description is generated automatically using traditional terminology.

How to use it

• Select a Field Tincture — this is your shield background color.
• Select a Charge Tincture — this is the color of your symbol(s).
• Choose a Field Division (plain or divided).
• Pick a Charge from the symbol grid, organized by category tabs.
• Adjust the quantity of charges (1–6) using the +/- buttons.
• Use Randomize to generate a random but valid coat of arms.
• Export SVG or PNG to download your design.
• Watch the Blazon Description update as you make changes.
