Add paints to your mix!
Most people think they understand color mixing because they use RGB sliders in design tools. But real paint mixing works completely differently — it's subtractive, not additive. When you mix red and blue paint, you get purple. But mix cyan and magenta, and you get a completely different purple. Artists who only know RGB sliders struggle when they sit down at a real palette.
Mixwell bridges that gap by teaching subtractive color mixing through play, helping designers, artists, and curious people develop genuine color intuition.
Mixwell is a color matching game where you're given a target color and a set of paint droplets. Click droplets to add them to your virtual mixing bowl. The game simulates real subtractive paint mixing (using the Kubelka-Munk spectral model) — not the simple RGB averaging that most tools use.
Match the target as closely as possible, then submit to see your accuracy. Earn points, build streaks, and work through increasingly challenging levels with limited palettes.
Each paint color has a spectral reflectance curve — a mathematical description of how it absorbs and scatters light at different wavelengths. When paints are mixed, the Kubelka-Munk theory combines these curves: the mixture absorbs more light than either component alone. This produces realistic results like yellow + blue = green (not white), and mixing too many colors eventually darkens toward brown/black.
Color distance is measured in CIEDE2000 (Delta-E) — the industry standard for perceptual color difference. A Delta-E below 2.0 is considered a "perfect match," 2-10 is "close," and above 10 is noticeably off.
Three game modes: Classic (50 progressive levels), Timed (match as many as you can in 60 seconds), and Endless (infinite random targets with increasing difficulty).
