Click anywhere on the chart to synthesize a vowel sound. The position determines tongue height (vertical) and frontness (horizontal). Pre-set IPA vowel markers are clickable too.

About Phoneme Lab
Why this project?
Speech production is one of the most remarkable things humans do — your vocal folds vibrate at a specific rate, and your tongue, lips, and jaw shape the vocal tract into a resonant cavity that filters that vibration into recognizable vowels and consonants. Yet most people have never seen or heard how the physics of formants creates the sounds of language. The Interactive Sagittal Section tool inspired this, but I wanted something that lets you not just look at mouth positions, but actually synthesize and experiment with the sounds yourself.
What is it?
Phoneme Lab is an interactive phonetics laboratory. It features an interactive vowel quadrilateral where you can click anywhere to hear a synthesized vowel, an animated mouth sagittal section showing tongue and lip positions, a full IPA consonant chart with synthesized audio, and a syllable builder where you can combine consonants and vowels to create sounds. The formant synthesizer uses real formant values from phonetic research.
How does it work?
The synthesizer uses the Web Audio API to create formant synthesis in real time. A noise source (or periodic pulse train for voiced sounds) is filtered through a bank of bandpass filters centered at the formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3). The vowel quadrilateral maps tongue position to formant values: F1 is inversely related to tongue height (high vowels = low F1), and F2 is related to tongue frontness (front vowels = high F2). Consonants are synthesized using noise bursts, frication noise, and stop releases with appropriate spectral shaping.
How to use it
Vowels tab: Click anywhere on the vowel quadrilateral to synthesize that vowel. Use the formant sliders to fine-tune. Press Play or Loop to hear the sound.
Consonants tab: Click any IPA symbol in the consonant chart to hear it. Hover for descriptions.
Syllable Lab: Choose a consonant, vowel, and optional coda consonant, then press Play to hear the combination.
Reference: Click any IPA vowel symbol to quickly load and hear it in the synthesizer.
