Baseline
The invisible line on which most letters sit.
Cap Height
The height of capital letters from the baseline.
x-Height
The height of lowercase letters (like x) from the baseline.
Ascender
The part of lowercase letters (b, d, h, l, t) that rises above x-height.
Descender
The part of lowercase letters (g, j, p, q, y) that extends below the baseline.
Serif
Small decorative strokes at the ends of letter strokes.
Stem
The main, typically vertical stroke of a letterform.
Arm
A stroke that does not connect to a stem on one or both ends (r, C).
Apex
The topmost point where two strokes meet (A, v, y).
Bowl
A curved stroke that forms part of a closed or open counter (b, o, c).
Counter
The enclosed or partially enclosed space within a letter (o, e, B).
Crossbar
A horizontal stroke that crosses a stem (A, E, F, t).
Terminal
The end of a stroke that does not have a serif (c, s, 5).
