The short version
AskIt is small, runs on a personal homelab, and has no business model: no advertising, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party cookies, no data sales. We collect what we need to run the site and nothing else.
What we store
- Account. Your username, display name, and a salted bcrypt password hash. We never store your password. If you sign in with Google, we additionally store Google's unique user ID, your Google email, and your Google display name, so the same Google account always signs in to the same AskIt account.
- Your questions and follow-ups. Posted content on AskIt is public, like a forum. Everything you post stays in the archive after a discussion closes.
- Session cookie. One browser cookie keeps you signed in. It is the only cookie on the site, and it contains a random session ID.
- Login-failure log. Your IP address and the time of failed login attempts, kept for up to 15 minutes per entry and used only to throttle repeated failed logins. Nothing else is recorded about your visits.
What we do not do
- No analytics or tracking scripts. The page makes zero requests to third parties.
- No advertising. Nothing you post is sold or licensed.
- No cross-site tracking, no fingerprinting, no "impressions" data.
- AI answers are generated by language models configured on our own infrastructure; your question text is sent to those models to produce answers, and nothing is retained by the model providers beyond their standard processing.
Your data
You can ask us to delete your account and its posts, or to export them, by contacting the site owner (below). Deletion removes your account, your questions, and the follow-ups you posted; panel answers to your questions remain in the archive, as they were generated for the public discussion.
