Madonna, 68, posted behind-the-scenes photos from a shoot for her new Confessions II merch line to Instagram this week, posing in a sheer black top, fishnets and a cascade of layered necklaces while peeking over a doorframe. Photos courtesy of Hello! Magazine.
The album dropped July 3. It hit No. 1 for the tenth time. And the album is still not the product. The product is the rhinestone tumbler. The merch line has been live since before the vinyl shipped.
Look at the shot. A 68-year-old pop icon peering from a doorway, necklaces cascading like a Christmas tree, mid-shoot for a line where her own name in rhinestones is the only thing on sale. The photo isn't promoting the music. The music is promoting the photo. The photo is promoting the tumbler.
And don't sleep on the distribution strategy: WhatsApp community members got a password for 30 minutes of early access to the drop. The year was 2003. She invented the drop. The algorithm just caught up.
The veil from the cover art is for sale. The pencils are for sale. Every era she has ever done is now inventory, and the Merch Matriarch is still clocked in.
YOUR TURN: At what point does the tumbler release the album?
