On Friday night, Olivia Rodrigo opened her Unraveled Tour at People's Bank Arena in Hartford, Connecticut, and artificial rain turned her white sleeveless dress into a disintegrating costume change during "the cure," revealing a red corset and micro miniskirt underneath, per Page Six.
Costume changes are the PR department of pop. You design the look, a phone in the third row films it, and by morning it is a "moment." But this one was six months of work by Hussein Chalayan, the designer famous for exactly one trick, fabric that water destroys. He ran a version of it through the runway in 2016 (Vogue has the deep dive) and now he spent half a year on one dress, so a decade-old runway experiment can be the lead image of a 2026 arena tour.
The tie-in does the press release's work. The dress unravels during a song that contains the lyric "I'm unraveled," on a tour called the Unraveled Tour, backed by a breakup album that reads like a doctor's note. One prop doing the work of a Q3 earnings call.
She posted "magic!!!!" on Saturday. The fan videos are everywhere. The fashion press is out here doing the "great runway experiment revived" thing. Chalayan gets the byline, the tour gets the clip, and the dress gets destroyed show after show while everyone calls it a love letter to fashion.
