According to The Athletic, Sydney Sweeney, an equity holder and strategic partner in the sports betting app Novig, fronted its "Just Sports" campaign, which shows her semi-nude playing sports while saying "no betting on wars or deaths and no politics." Olympic swimmers and gymnasts answered with their own counter-campaign showing what women in sports actually look like.

The line in the ad does the heavy lifting: no betting on wars or deaths, no politics. A betting app for sports needs that disclaimer the way a casino needs "please drink responsibly." Sports are politics now, and the line is the mechanism. It is the part of the ad that says we know exactly what we are selling.

And she is not just the face. She is an equity holder. When the ad becomes the story, The Strategic Partner cannot complain that the asset is doing its job. The athletes' counter-campaign is the free marketing every PR department envies: a thousand real sports clips set against one actress and a stack of balls.

The slogan is now a sentence people can finish. The app is now searchable. That is not a botched launch. That is a launch with an unexpected second budget line.

YOUR TURN: Is an ad that triggers a counter-ad a failure, or the best ad ever bought?
