According to PBS NewsHour, Converse pulled a global sneaker campaign starring Karina of aespa this week after critics said the lighting on her skirt evoked a KKK hood and the way she held the shoes evoked a lynching. The company apologized with "We're sorry" and said it is removing the image from every channel where it appeared.

The image cleared every door a global campaign has to clear: legal, marketing, leadership. And the wall it finally hit was not a lawyer. It was the first person to look at the ad with actual eyes.

The apology is doing more work than the shoe ever did. "We're sorry. We will do better." That is not a statement, that is a product. It gets a font, a distribution schedule, and a follow-up post in which the same people who approved the photo look into a camera like they have already learned something. The Apology Machine does not fix images. It ships apologies.

The escalation is the funniest part. A sitting congressman now wants an independent probe into the campaign. In pop culture, the only independent review board left is a congressional one, and subpoena power is doing the work of a media manager.

YOUR TURN: Does "we will do better" mean anything, or is it just the last line of a template?
